Got the first egg Empty Got the first egg

Post by mountainmama Wed Jun 20, 2012 7:05 pm

Our batch of pullets is 19 weeks old and we got our first egg from them yesterday. We think it was a Golden Campine that laid it. It was the smallest egg I've ever seen, downright tiny compared to those from our "big" hens. Still, it's always a thrill to get that first egg and the girls were so excited. It's a promise of more to come from the group, although the heavier breeds will take longer to start laying.

Congratulations. I love listening to the rest of the hens cheering on the one laying an egg. Smile I remember we had gotten a really small egg from one of our hens when they first started laying. It was about the size of our dove eggs. Speaking of our doves, they just hatched out a baby. They are so ugly when first hatched. Smile I call them our naked little babies. We don't use our doves for food, they're more pets than anything else.

Do you have the white doves or the mourning doves, Sonshine? I didn't realize those could be raised like other birds.

I have white doves. I'm a gospel magician and use the doves in the illusions. They are a great visual when teaching about becoming a new creation.
