Lost one of our goats
One of our bucks that was a little over a year old died about a week ago. We don't have any vets that take care of goats close by, so we're not sure what happened. He never really seemed healthy though. We realized he was getting worse and gave him an injection of ivermectin hoping that would help and he did seem to perk up a bit, but the next day Joe found him dead in the barn.
All the new kids are doing pretty well, except for one of the triplets. She was the runt and although she's still nursing from Momma, I don't think she's getting enough. Her siblings keep pushing her away when she tries to nurse, so we started supplementing with a bottle. Hope she makes it. She's tiny, but such a sweetie.

I am sorry. You Say ONE I am hoping that means that you have another buck. Even knowing WHY a an animal dies does not do anything but provide info for the future IF there really is anything you could have done. With the others goats doing fine and since you state that that one did seem to have issues I do not think there is any reason to think that you did not provide all that you could. I hate the loss from death.

Yes, we have another full grown buck. Right now we put him with a neighbor so he wouldn't be alone. We had 4 bucklings born this year that we were going to sell. Now we're going to keep two of them so our older buck has a buddy in the bachelor's quarter. I just hate losing them. I get very attached to my goats.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your buck Sonshine. I sure hope your runt gets stronger from the extra bottles you are feeding her.

Re: Lost one of our goats
I am sorry for your loss. I know how close we get to all of our animals, and with a goats personality you would have been very attached.
The ground we raise cattle on carries some kind of bacteria that requires the calves, and new bulls be innoculated for. (very strong vitamin K injection to help their immune system, somehow. ) If you even remotely suspect soil borne illness get a soil sample to either the extension office or the closest USDA office.
Best wishes on the runt, we have bottle raised a few runt cows that never fully developed. They lived out their lives as pets.

So sorry that you lost a goat. It is hard loosing an animal especially when you have become attached to them. I'm glad you have others to take his place though.

Keith, one of our does was a bottle baby. The lady we bought them from always bottle fed so she had quicker access to the milk. I'll see what we can do about the soil samples, but wouldn't it affect the other goats if that was the problem?
Re: Lost one of our goats
it really should, but the others may have an immunity, where the one missed it some how. It is just something we deal with, that many others have never heard of, and I only mention it if you have eliminated other possible causes, like wilted cherry leaves, or other accidental poisoning.

I'm sorry for your loss, and I sure hope the bottle baby makes it.

No cherry trees so no problem with wilted leaves. I have checked out their pasture area and haven't seen anything that could have caused poisoning. I'm thinking he never really was healthy to start with. He was always on the thin side, but he held on for over a year. The others all seem to be doing great. Even the bottle baby. Although the bottle baby is tiny, she's doing all the same things the other kids are doing. She's taken to the bottle really well, but is also still nursing some off momma.
