Prep on a Budget at Salvage stores

Re: Prep on a Budget at Salvage stores
hmm for some things this would be great, but I have concerns about low acid food stuffs that other stores are not willing or able to sell to the public. I have seen a co-worker hoard Gatorade beyond it's use by date and become violently ill from bacterial infection. So while this could save some money, just use common sense with purchases and use.

Good things to get in bulk would be dried beans and peas, rice, pastas, canned goods. Just check the cans for rust or bulging. Most things the expiration dates are mainly there because the product can begin to lose some of the nutrients, but can still be ok to eat. This is also why it's so important to rotate your foods.

Habitat for Humanity also has their "re-store" outlets. Surplus building materials, used furniture, new appliances etc

Check out your local Re-Store for building supplies. There is always something that needs to be built or repaired (especially on a running homestead )

Re: Prep on a Budget at Salvage stores
I'm building my little barn with reclaimed pallets, culled wood from the lumbar yard and reclaimed ply wood for the base of the roof to attach the metal roofing too. My fencing, hopefully, will also be pallets. There is a discount building supply store in the next big town up from me and I might go check it out to see what they've got.
