Quilting Thread Empty Quilting Thread

Post by Sonshine Thu May 07, 2009 11:06 pm

http://how-to-quilt.com/articles/6003-quilting-thread.php

Quilters are artists. Their canvas is fabric, and their paint is thread. But that is only part of the picture. Thread holds the canvas (quilt) together, and using the wrong thread can cause frustration, aggravation and even a quilt destroyed before its time.

There are three basic types of thread:

• Natural Fibers – wool, silk, cotton, flax, jute
• Regenerated – rayon, acetate
• Man-Made – polyester, nylon, acrylic, elastic, polypropylene, glass, metallic

To read the rest of the article just click on the link. She puts out a great news letter for beginners.

Trust me, you don't want to do a block swap with me. I actually posted this hoping that some quilters were here because I want to learn. I signed up for a beginning quilters newsletter hoping to learn. Smile

I'm a quilter. I'm not a beginner and I'm not a pro. I'm some where in the middle.LOL I know how to do alot of the basics. I do alot of baby quilts and throws, because I don't have enough room for a full size quilting frame.

How would you like to teach the basics? Assume I don't know a single thing about quilting, which is basically true. LOL So, if you are game, You can start a new thread on quilting 101 and I'll put a sticky on it. That way, those, like me, who want to learn, but don't have a clue where to begin, can take a shot at it. Afterwards, we may try to block swap. I think that would be fun.

Well, give me a couple of days to try an sort through what is in my brain and try an translate it to writen english. It is hard for me just to tell people how to do things, I usually have to show them at the same time.
Remember I'm not a pro...I'm still learning too.

That would be great. You can share what you know and hopefully by then, others will come a long and we'll all learn together. Start out by telling us what we need, so when you're ready to start walking us through it we have the supplies on hand. Smile

Ok, here is a good list of tools and supplies you will need to start.
Rotary Cutter
Rotary Mat(24"x36") it can be a little smaller, but this is the size I have.
Rotary Rulers(6"x24") I think most of them are see through these day. Clear
w/measurements marked on it.
Square Rulers(61/2" or 12 1/2")They are good to have,but I don't have one.
Many times I wish I did,I would have been
able to do a more acurate job.
Sewing Machine: one that have the simple stitches on it is all you will need.
The majority of the time you will only be using a straight
stitch.
Cotton Fabric: That is the best to start learning on.
Iron and Ironing board
Fabric Scissors
Paper Scissors
Cotton Thread
Seam Ripper
Pins:Long strait pins w/larg heads are easier to work with.
Needles:
Hand sewing Needles:"Betweens" are
what most expeireanced hand quilters
use. I like "Sharps" they are best known
as all purpose hand sewing needles.
They are longer and finer than "Betweens"
I use size 8 or 9

Sewing machine needles: You will need
sharp point for Medium weight Woven
fabric. A size 14 or 90/14
