Do you plant a Fall garden?
I usually don't because our weather is so unpredictable here in zone 5. I did start some cabbage seedlings in hopes of getting them going and maybe have some small heads to harvest before the first frost. Unfortunately the night before I was going to transplant them, something stripped the tiny leaves off of every single seedling. It is too late in the season to even bother to try and get more going now.
So if you do plant in the Fall, what do you sow and what zone are you in?

I got in my collard greens, Mustard-Spinach, spinach and turnips and beets. I think I have one head of cabbage that made it. The day I planted it got up to 92 degrees and burned all the cabbages up.

Re: Do you plant a Fall garden?
We had planned to this year, but have so much to do with the cooler weather. We are going to plant some winter wheat to see how that goes. We're going to be enlarging the goat pen and chicken coop this fall, plus trying to figure out how to make cheese and soap, so decided to forego the fall garden this year. I'd love to know how everyone does with their's though.
Re: Do you plant a Fall garden?
I'm planning to put out some collard greens, kale and I mix the turnip and mustard seed and sew them. I'd love to have some swiss chard too. The collard greens and kale will survive the winter but the other greens will be killed if the temps get down to the teens for a couple of days.
Right now we have yellow squash that's beginning to produce, zucchini that should start blooming in the next week, the green beans aren't looking too good nor are the cucumbers. I try to plant these four veggies for a late summer/early fall garden each year.
I could live on greens. They are one of my favorite veggies. Any kind of green will do. LOL

Re: Do you plant a Fall garden?
I've got to see if I can find some kale seeds locally, otherwise I'll have to order some. I planted some garlic, Swiss chard and spinach today. I've never grown kale or chard so we'll see how we like the chard when it comes up. I would alos like to start some broccoli, cauliflower and maybe more cabbage this week.

I've never had luck with garlic growing bulbs. Same thing with onions.

You need rich soil, they are heavy feeder. I amend mine with chicken manure.

Re: Do you plant a Fall garden?
I planted Inchelium Red garlic last fall and left them there until they started to die back in July. I was very impressed with how big they got and that's with my dog digging up about a 1/3 of them last December and having to gently replant them!
My onions never get as big as I'd like, though. Smaller than you'd buy in the store. I think I need to start the seeds earlier.

Re: Do you plant a Fall garden?
We did good with onions the year we had horse manure in our garden. But when we moved them to another spot we did not do as good. I want to try garlic. I have never planted it. I am hoping to put in greens this year since I do not have animals to get into them.
Re: Do you plant a Fall garden?
My garlic doesn't get big either but I use the leaves more than the garlic. I like the flavor of the leaves. They're not called leaves by horticulurists but I can't remember what they are called so I'll just call them leaves. LOL
Patrice, I slice the Swiss Chard after the stems are removed and sautee it in some olive oil and garlic. William and I both like it cooked this way. I cook Kale the same way unless I'm making kale, potato and sausage soup.

Re: Do you plant a Fall garden?
I just put up my dream greenhouse ( a lean to style that attaches to the house ) and planted my first ever "fall garden". I'm usually too busy to put seeds in in August or Sept when you should plant outdoors. My garlic, onions, leeks, and turnips have already come up, I'm waiting on the Spinach and the Swiss Chard. I'm curious to see how it goes with the greenhouse - how long I can grow things in there and how late in the year.

Re: Do you plant a Fall garden?
You'll have to tell us how it works. We have a small greenhouse that I use to start my seeds in, but haven't really used it to grow the plants to maturity.
