venting the new ventless gas cans Empty venting the new ventless gas cans

Post by 12acrehome Tue Feb 07, 2012 12:56 am

These new gas cans have one major flaw. There are no provisions to vent air into them as gas is poured out of them. This is easily fixed. Go to an auto parts store and get a short valve stem for a car or truck tire. measure the recessed area where this stem seats to seal on the car rim. and drill a hole in the can up high on or near the handle, away from where the gas spout is. remove the core from the stem, and insert the stem into the hole. Use the valve stem screw cap to close off the vent for storage.

hmmm, wonder why they didn't put venting in them. Seems to me that would be dangerous.

I think it was to limit the flow coming out. I think it was the EPA's doing. Somehow they figure that a slower flow is better for the environment. At least that is what I think I read somewhere. I could be wrong.

The old cans have vents and work great. I think this is another government regulation that doesn't make any sense.
12acre's solution is a good idea that I think I'll trying.
Thanks for the idea.

This is an old post, copied from an old post from another board.

Here is a video that shows some common sense mods for those who actually have a functioning brain. The guy in the video used an old style vent, but the same idea applies to the valve stem. Drill in the same place, but working the stem into the hole takes more than just a whack from a hammer.
