Rare Breed Chickens

Post by Mississippi Momma on Sat Jan 07, 2012 9:31 am

We are thinking about raising a couple of rare breed chickens. I've been doing a lot of research on Coronation Sussex and Buckeyes. I've located a breeder of the Coronation Sussex about 90 miles from us. I haven't talked to them yet but plan on trying to get in touch with them this weekend. I haven't found anyone who raises the Buckeyes here in Mississippi yet but will continue to look. I'm not wanting to raise show chickens but just to keep a endangered breed going. I like the Sussex because it's a dual purpose breed. I just like the looks of the Buckeye.

I'm also checking on the Black Copper Marans simply because they lay a beautiful egg.

Do any of you raise rare breeds and if so which breeds are you raising?

I really like our Marans. Our first rooster was so tame and sweet. He was crossed with a Black Austraulorpe and we now have a fine roo and hen with his sweet disposition. Sadly, our first roo was killed by a neighbor's dog and I have been unable to get more Black Copper Marans except the two we have from him.

We also have a few Golden Campines, which are flighty escape artists, and some buff Brahmas that are sweethearts. The dark Brahmas are docile, but not as friendly to us as the buffs.

One thing I've noticed about the Marans and the Brahmas is that they tend to pick at each other less than some of the other breeds. They seem to get along better and have been great for our kids.

We've had to put this idea on hold until I get where I can get out and help more. William has about all he can handle right now. I would love to have some black copper marans. I like the way they look and also I love the color of their eggs.
