what do you need to feed chickens to get them filled out better
I have had problems filling out the breast of our chickens. They are healthy and are free range in the fall. They are put up in garden season. Some are on grass and the others get grass that I cut for them. They get corn and veggies. They have plenty of room to run. We raised RIR's until now. Now we have what they call heavy breeds. They have RIR's in them but others as well. A few buffs, some sexlinks and some black and white chickens.

The heavy breeds will seem like they take forever to fill out....We have got some Jersey Giants, and it takes at least a year for them to mature to a degree...Alot of times when you have free range chickens...which to my notion that is the best and healthiest method, They are leaner and tend to have more muscle mass from more exercise....My grandpa always raised chickens...if he wanted to get some fattened up to butcher...would put them in a smaller pen and give them fresh veggies...fed them corn and had fresh water...waited for about 10 days to 2 weeks and did the deed...
Do you ever use Food Grade DE as a supplement to their diet?....suppose to make them flourish and keeps them from having worms..all natural...I have used DE and will again...just let myself run out of it...Study Diamatheous Earth...maybe misspelled...some think it is nonsense but I know it works...good for a chicken pen and barnyard also....
Sounds like you take good care of your chickens Amy....and have the right ideas on things...I think all natural or as close is the best...MissKItty

I can not get food grade de here. I have looked into it for all my livestock. They are free range half the year. Last year I was fighting them for tomatoes and squash so I put them up this year. I just ordered 100 more and they are a few months old. I do not think I could stand them being free range. That is way to many for that.

I was so blessed and found Food Grade DE at our local co-op and a very reasonable price...couldn't believe it,,,,bouth 150 pounds of it..lol..But that has been quite awhile ago...
Yeap, that is alot of chicks Amy...Ours free range, but now since the garden is coming on they are either going to have to stay in their pen or get the chicken tractors a going....I don't fret over the guineas...they will help keep the bugs down...but the chickens will wipe out the 'maters and squash....I might get very upset..lol...Are you planning on butchering any???..MissKitty

What's the difference between food grade and the other?
Re: what do you need to feed chickens to get them filled out better
If it is not food grade DO NOT feed it to animals...It will kill them...
regular DE is sort of a natural pesticide and Food Grade is like a fine talc...I have even known folks who took it...Not good to breath...use in a very open area...MissKitty

Re: what do you need to feed chickens to get them filled out better
Ok, thanks. I got some to put on my strawberry plants to try to stop the slugs. Not sure if it's food grade or not. I'll have to check, and if it is, try to give some to my chickens.

If you get the food grade you can give it to all your animals. It is suppost to be a natural wormer and bug repellent. The co op here doesnt sell the food grade type.
