Turkey Question Empty Turkey Question

Post by amybyrd21 Sun May 08, 2011 12:28 pm

We have not had any luck keeping the Turkey Chicks alive. The two that hatched died. I was told today that in about three days after they hatch I needed to suction thier noses for mucus. Does any one know if this is true. I have one more that hatched out and maybe more on the way in this hatching and atleast 4 more in the next hatching. Any suggestions are appreciated. I do have them in a separet brooding box from the ducks and chickens. Thank you.

Turkey Question Empty Re: Turkey Question

I've never raised turkeys, so the only knowledge I have regarding raising them is stuff I've read in books. One thing I read was that, unlike chickens, many turkey chicks take awhile to catch on about eating and drinking. I guess initally you have to pretty much take them to the food and water. Another thing I've heard is to keep them separated from chickens because of disease issues.

The one that hatched last night died. Hubby stayed up with it. Tried to fed and water it. It had its own brood box (A lego box my 6 year old gave it) and light with a themometer in it so we can keep the temp right. We are just not having any luck with the turkeys. the chickens and ducks are doing great.

I'm so sorry. Wish I could give some advice. If it was chickens I might be able to help, but they are the only poultry I've raised.

Turkey Question Empty Re: Turkey Question

We have one turkey that hatched this time so far. We left him in the incubator over night. Three days later he is doing fine. He is also in the brooder with ducks and no chickens. I dont know which one made the difference. We have a few more trying to hatch. We are going to leave them in the incubator for a while before taking them out too.

Turkey Question Empty Re: Turkey Question

Post by amybyrd21 Thu Jun 16, 2011 9:35 am

It must be true what they say about turkeys not being smart at all. My daughters turkey almost drowned in the rain this afternoon. All the baby ducks and the 2 small chickens got into the dog house in thier chicken tractor. The turkey stayed out side and almost died. I had to bring it in and blow it dry. It is now in a brooder in the house cheaping at me for being alone.

We have more hatching soon so I need to work out a place to put them whne they are small . Any ideas?

Turkey Question Empty Re: Turkey Question

Post by Sonshine Thu Jun 16, 2011 11:29 am

I watched some sort of documentary on turkeys the other day. They said that turkeys aren't very bright and when it rains, they're curious about what's going on, so they look up and end up drowning. Smile As for where to put them when they're small, where do you keep your chickens? As I said earlier, I don't know much about turkeys, but when our chicks were small we placed them in a kiddie pool and then put a portable dog kennel around the pool. Works well for the babies. We also had the pool and dog fencing inside the barn.

They are in a chicken tractor with a dog house in it. Every thing else does fine in there after they are off the brood light. But this turkey is being difficult. I am just going to have to wait until it gets some size to it to put it out side I guess.
