Ducks------

Post by amybyrd21 on Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:03 am

I think we are going to have ducks by Friday. The eggs are in the incubator. They are just now starting to wobble around and crack a little. There are 14 in there so we are hoping for atleast 12. In our second incubator there are turkey and duck eggs. They both take 28 days to hatch. Chickens take only 21. We are hoping to start the chicken eggs as soon as the weather warms up enough to gather eggs that are not chilled.

I love to watch eggs hatch. I ordered ten ducks last night.

What breed of duck do you raise? I love the Khaki Campbell. I sell their eggs to a teacher who also bakes cakes with them. Well I sold eggs to her until dogs broke into the pasture and killed all our ducks. Maybe when the ones I ordered grow up she'll buy eggs from me again.

Best wishes on your hatch.

We have ahtching Ducks. A friend was over delivering more duck and turkey eggs and we all got to watch one hatch. He is out and walking around waiting for his brother and sisters to hatch. They are breaking thier shells and we are patiently waiting.

Awww, that is so sweet. I've never tried raising any poultry other than our chickens. I also have a couple of white doves that will hatch out eggs once in awhile, when we let them. Smile I use the doves in my magic tricks. They hatched out a couple of babies a few months ago, but I found one of them dead in the cage this morning. Not real sure what happened to it, the other is doing great. Eating on it's own and getting up on the perches, etc. The one that died never tried to get on the perch. I think the mom stopped feeding them, since they are old enough to eat, but I don't think the one that died was ever really quite right. We gave the other one away today to a friend. I had been promising her one for quite awhile now.

We had two ducks that were born with thier insides on the out side. I am wondering if any one knows what causes that. I was told it just happens sometimes but we had two in the same batch. So far we have three ducks that have hatched. I was worried I wouldnt get any due to the weather being cool when they saved the eggs. I am hoping for a better hatch rate for the other incubator. It is full of turkey, duck and chicken eggs at the moment. They are due out in about 20 days from now. Ducks and turkeys take 28 and chickens around 21. I added the chicken eggs later so they come out at the same time.

How precious. Hey, I have a question. How hard is it to raise chickens and ducks together? I have a neighbor that's wanting to do that. Do they get along ok? Can they be put in the same coop? Do they eat the same foods? Ok, so it was more than one question. LOL

How cute. It's so interesting to watch the ducks and chicks and turkeys (LOL) to emerge from the eggs. I have't tried to incubate any in a while. The last time I incubated chicks I got six out of thirty-six to hatch and the goose eggs...none hatched. This was a new incubator too. I couldn't get the temp to stay steady.
