My hen is a cannibal!!!
At least I think she is. All I know for sure is that she's been setting eggs for about 3 weeks now and when Joe went out to check there's only one left out of the 10 she started with. No shells or anything. What would cause her to do this? She must be waiting for them to hatch, then eats them. YUCK!
Re: My hen is a cannibal!!!
Katrina, that sounds like a snake eating the eggs if there's no shells or signs of where the hen ate them. I had a hen setting once and all her eggs disappeared. A few days later we found a big chicken snake in the pen. That's what we guessed happened to the eggs.

Yeah, we figured out it was probably a snake, after I talked to my Dad about it. We haven't seen any sign of it, but Joe put mothballs around the entire premiter of the coop and run.
Re: My hen is a cannibal!!!
My grandma use to put "fake" eggs in the nest. Not sure if they were plastic or ceramic. Then when the snake would pass through the cyclone fence, it would get stuck and they could kill it. Even if it doesn't pass through a fence, I am sure the eggs would eventually kill it. Hope this helps.

Thanks, guess I'll have to put a plastic egg out there and see what happens, because we haven't been able to catch the little critter.
