Getting my order ready for new birds Empty Getting my order ready for new birds

Post by Mississippi Momma Tue Mar 01, 2011 10:44 am

We haven't had any trouble since last fall with raccoons getting to our chickens. So.....I'm getting an order together for more Easter Eggers, Khaki Campbell ducks, some geese, some turkeys and some guineas (I think Hubby is going to let me get some). William has always been afraid that the guineas would stray and tear up our neighbors yards But he is building a sturdy chicken tractor and I'm going to put the guineas in it and put them out under the pine trees to see if they will do away with all the ticks out there.

A couple of years ago dogs tore into our pasture while we were gone and killed all our ducks. I loved my ducks. They are so fun to watch. Also, we haven't raised any turkeys in a few years so we're going to try to raise a few turkeys but keep a couple of hens and a tom so I won't have to buy more next spring.

I've been wanting some geese for years and finally I can order a couple when I order the ducks.

I am looking forward to having our yard full of birds again. Now if I could just get William to go along with getting a couple of milk goats, I'd be set. LOL

Where are you ordering from? We want to replace our chickens. We never got any to hatch out babies, with the exception of one, and it didn't make it. Now they're getting pretty old, so we want to start over. Also, we're wanting some good dual purpose chickens, got any recomendations?

I order from Murray McMurray. The Easter Eggers aren't good brooders. I have a couple of game hens that I bought just for that purpose. I'd love to have some more silkies. They are great little incubators. LOL

We've never bought any chickens for anything but layers. I bought some what I call "mutts" from a neighbor and hatched off some of their eggs. I put those in the freezer and used them for soups, dumplings and stews. I never tried to fry any of them. Sorry that I can reccomend a good dual-purpose breed for you. Maybe some of the other members have an idea.

I'm going to place my order so the chicks will arrive about the middle of April. Maybe by then it will be a little warmer and the temps will hold steady. Of course they'll be kept inside for several weeks and then go to an outside brooder where we keep heat on for them.

We're going to have to build another brooder for the ducks & geese and one for the turkeys.
