Noobie Gardening Empty Noobie Gardening

Post by 7dawn Mon Mar 01, 2010 3:06 am

Hi, I thought about adding a separate group for this but thougt having a subject in the gardening area would be a good idea. I am sure there are many people like me who are new at it or like me, not very good at it. I live in central Texas and the heat of summer usually totally kills what I am trying to grow if all the rabbits haven't gotten to it first.

We have wild rabbits and I am trying to figure out a way to keep them off my plants as well as the field mice. Mad I also have a puppy that has managed to eat part of my pomegranite tree and a rose bush. Mad

Odd thing is, my purple basil, cilantro, peppermint, spearmint, and oregano have survived the freezes this year and our recent snow day....Go figure! So this week I am going to start planting some of my seeds and see how they do. I have to find a place in doors to keep them which should be interesting. Sonshine can ask Joe...There is absolutely no room in my house! Ah well, I am sure I can figure something out! LOL

As long as you have windows, you have a place to start plants. Smile

Guess you just have to teach the rugrats not to touch. Better yet, let them plant their own plant to tend to. It'll give them a wonderful science lesson. Let them help you with the plants. I'm sure they will enjoy it. Once their own plant is big enough, let them help plant it outside. One neat way to do this with kids is to plant a bean in a glass jar. Put a damp paper towel in the jar, then put the bean where they can watch it crack open and start growing.

*Shudders at the thought....* One day you are going to come visit me and see the little nightmares in action. They spent most of the day in time out for running and screaming in the house. affraid

I could give it a try though. pale Ainsley spends the entire day seeing what she can get into without me noticing. I need to see what seeds I have that we could plant...I have to find the seeds I have so we can plant them.... scratch

So I just stick a damp paper towel in a jar and let it go? Do I have to keep it damp? Does a lid need to go on it?

Take an ordinary glass jar. Fold and roll up a paper towel and place it snugly in the jar, if it's a big jar you may need two paper towels. Between the paper and the glass put your seeds. Keep the paper towel moist. do not put a lid on it. If you use dried beans, they work well for this project. Smile
