Kudzu, who knew???
I have discovered that kudzu is a fascinating plant. It has value in basket weaving, culinary world and as a medicinal herb. Don't believe me? Check out these links!

Oh, there's so much more information out there. Just google it. I have a kudzu vine wreath that my Mom made for me a few years back. Looks just like a grapevine wreath. So, you can cook it, medicate with it and make nice baskets with it. Who knew?

Re: Kudzu, who knew???
I wish the vinegatherers in this county would use the kudzu instead of wiping out the muscadines that have always been so common in this area. You can't find any wild grapes anymore as the vines are taken to make wreaths to send to other countries. What a waste of natural resources! Ummm, am I a bit on the grumpy side or what? lol Blessings, M. A.

Re: Kudzu, who knew???
Martha,
I figured that many in this forum live in areas that kudzu seems to be taking over. That's why I thought I would share the info on kudzu. Maybe you could set a trend and start basket weaving or making wreaths with them? Like you, I like muscadines. We actually grew some in Alabama.

Re: Kudzu, who knew???
I used to make the kudzu free form baskets when I lived in Ga., along with wreaths. I supplied my handmade crafts to a craft store in N. Ga. (Blairsville) that a friend of mine owned. I did handmade checkerboards w/checker holders to match, dolls, sheep, etc. Then I adopted Nikki and found my time to be all taken up. Five years later when I was ready to resume crafting, we got Bret. Well, by that time I was 50 yo and somehow just never really got back to it. Now I am into gardening, herbs, animals, great-grands, etc. and probably will never get back to much crafting. Blessings, M. A.

Martha,
Yeah, but the winter time is a great time to pick this craft up again. No garden to tend to.

Re: Kudzu, who knew???
Yes, but babysitting the little one while her parents work and crafting too are too much at my age. It is all I can do to keep up with the little one, don'tcha see? I really would like to make dolls for the two little ones, but I am worn out from keeping one of them, even tho she is quiet and well behaved. She thinks I am her age, and I forget that I am not. I never got to be grandma before since I was busy raising my two last kids. I really enjoy my time with Hailie but have to give up other things to do so. Not complaining; jist explainin'. Blessings, M. A.

Re: Kudzu, who knew???
I do understand. I have a 10 yr old special needs child that at times can be high maintenance. At 51 that may not sound too bad, but he wears me out! LOL
Re: Kudzu, who knew???
Sonshine, one of the greatest blessings God has given me was a cousin who was special needs. Ernie was older than my older brother even, and he never grew in mind beyond maybe 5 or 6 yo. He eventually was confined to a wheelchair but as a boy, he was active even with a twisted leg and foot. He could make up poetry that he never forgot. He was my biological father's nephew but he adored my mother. Many of his poems were about her even tho my <father> left us when I was 3 and my mother had the 4th child on the way. They kept in touch with us as best they could for many years, and even after losing touch, I found out when my uncle died. I went up north to the funeral. No one knew I was coming, and no one recognized me, except Ernie. My aunt told her "I bet you don't know who this is, do you?" He ducked his head; looked up at me and said "it's Marfa Anne, ain't it?" We were all amazed. He never learned to read or write. Never attended school, tho he did church. He was never able to live on his own, but he never forgot those he loved. Because of Ernie, I never had the fear of, or the shyness around those who were special needs. They have the same need as we do; to be talked with, to be remembered and not talked over as tho they aren't there. God bless you and your child. By the way, I was 50 when I adopted my last child who was then 5 mos. old. He is 19 now, and still at home with Mama. Blessings, M. A.

Kudzu root is suppose to make a nice flour.
Never tried it but I read it on the internet, it must be true.

Re: Kudzu, who knew???
Oh. I thought that was maybe why they aren't commonly used.

Re: Kudzu, who knew???
I think the reason they aren't commonly used is because people only think of them as weeds, same as dandelion and many other plants.
Re: Kudzu, who knew???
the wikipedia sez
"Kudzu can be used by grazing animals as it is high in quality as a forage and greatly enjoyed by livestock. It can be enjoyed up until frost and even slightly after. Kudzu hay typically has a 15–18% crude protein content and over 60% total digestible nutrient value. The quality of it decreases, however, as vine content increases relative to the leaf content."
I didnt know that.

Kudzu
We’ll it seems old Rev Jack “the Quack” is no more. I think we can all learn a lesson here. Just because you saw it on the internet, it’s not always true! I did hear however that you can hear Kudzu growing late at night. Kudzu grows so fast it will take over trees, sheds, power poles and I’ve even seen homes engulfed in Kudzu. It was originally brought to the U.S. to help with erosion control in the south east and it kind of took over. When we lived in Alabama I would have to cut the vines regularly or they would take over our grape vines.

Re: Kudzu, who knew???
Kudzu has taken over several back roads here. they burn it out. I was told that when I was little that there were little people that lived in the kudzu. They would come to your house and borrow stuff. And when you did not need it no more it turned back up. I do not remember what relative told me that but they also said if they were caught that was what they made naugahide for car seats out of. They came in all diffrent colors. I was scared by that . lol Now looking back it is funny.
Re: Kudzu, who knew???
LOL! Isn't it amazing the stories that we grew up with? *looks around for little men wandering around that might want to take my stuff*

Hmmmm, maybe the pot at the end of the rainbow really might be covered over by kudzu; or the naugas have already found it. The Naugas? You know, where naugahydes come from. Y'all are really hilarious, you know and I love it. Blessings and have a great weekend, M. a.

Re: Kudzu, who knew???
I spent some time living in Hawaii on the Island Oahu. There's a pass there that they believe have minihoonies (sp) living in. They believe that when things come up missing it's because the minihoonies took them. My landlady took it very serious. I misplaced my keys one day and she said that maybe the minihoonies took them. I laughed at that and she got very serious and looked me in the eye and told me that I better not laugh at the minihoonies or they would put a curse on me.
Re: Kudzu, who knew???
I have heard stories where the farmers cut it down clear to their back forty and it beat them back to the house.
Re: Kudzu, who knew???
I had actually thought of writing a children's book about kudzu, and how some kids went camping one night and woke up in a kudzu cave. Still might, if I ever get back into writing and can get my stories illustrated. **Susan, that's a hint**

Re: Kudzu, who knew???
You know the old saying, it's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. That's my feelings on Hawaii.
Re: Kudzu, who knew???
I love Hawaii....But I love water. Sigh....None to find in central Texas. No beaches just rivers. I don't care for rivers or lakes. My parents used to have a condo in Maui right on the beach. The man lost his mind and sold it....
